Family doctors, obstetricians, and registered midwives all provide excellent pregnancy and birth care. Women have the option of choosing any one of these care providers.
Obstetricians are specialists with extra training in surgical skills. They usually care for women with higher risk pregnancies or complications (such as twins or a premature baby). Some obstetricians also care for women with normal pregnancies. Midwives are trained to care for normal pregnancy and birth and can offer birth at home in certain circumstances.
In B.C. you can choose either a doctor or a midwife for your pregnancy care, but not both. Feel free to discuss this with your doctor if you need more information.
